Service StabiliTrak, Service Tire Monitor and Service 4WD: Chevy Dash Messages Explained
These three messages point to three different systems, but they share common root causes — most often low battery voltage, a failing sensor, or a wiring fault. None of them mean the vehicle is undrivable, and all of them mean a safety or convenience system is currently offline.
Chevrolet dashboards communicate in specific messages rather than generic warning lights, which is helpful once you know what each one is pointing at.
Service StabiliTrak

StabiliTrak is GM’s name for its electronic stability control system. It monitors steering input against actual vehicle direction and intervenes with individual brake application when it detects a skid beginning.
“Service StabiliTrak” means the system found a fault and disabled itself. Braking and steering are unaffected; the automatic stability intervention is off.
This message very often appears together with a Service ESC message, because they describe the same underlying system. Our Service ESC guide covers that in more depth.
Common causes: low battery voltage, a wheel speed sensor, the steering angle sensor, or a wiring fault.
Service Tire Monitor System
This one is different — it is not the low tire pressure warning. That is a separate indicator showing a tire is actually underinflated.
“Service Tire Monitor System” means the TPMS system itself is not working properly. The vehicle cannot tell you whether your pressures are correct, which means you have lost the warning rather than gained one.
Common causes:
- A dead TPMS sensor battery. These sensors have batteries sealed inside them, typically lasting somewhere between five and ten years. They cannot be replaced individually — the sensor is replaced.
- A sensor damaged during tire service. They sit inside the wheel and can be damaged during mounting.
- Sensors not relearned after tire rotation or replacement on some models.
- A missing sensor, commonly after fitting a spare or aftermarket wheels.
If this message appeared right after tire work, a relearn procedure is the likely fix and it is quick.
Because the system is offline, check your pressures manually with a gauge until it is repaired. Use the driver’s door jamb figure, checked cold.
Service 4WD

On four-wheel-drive Silverado and other GM trucks, this message indicates a fault in the four-wheel-drive system — most often in the transfer case control module, the encoder motor that shifts the transfer case, or the switch itself.
The vehicle typically remains drivable in two-wheel drive. What you may lose is the ability to engage four-wheel drive, which matters more in December than it does in July.
Common causes: the transfer case encoder motor, the selector switch, wiring, low fluid in the transfer case, or — again — low battery voltage.
The thread running through all three
Notice how often battery voltage appears. It is the single most common cause of unexplained module faults across modern vehicles, and it is the cheapest thing to test.
If you are seeing more than one of these messages at once, that pattern points strongly toward a shared cause — voltage or a communication network issue — rather than three separate component failures.
What to do
Have the battery load-tested first. Then get the specific fault codes read with equipment that can access GM module data, since generic scanners often cannot.
Our service department can do both, and our diagnostics offer applies. Do not clear the codes first — that erases the data that makes diagnosis efficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Service StabiliTrak serious? It disables a safety system. The vehicle drives normally, but get it repaired, especially before wet weather.
Why does my tire monitor message appear after new tires? Sensors often need a relearn procedure after rotation or replacement, and they can be damaged during mounting.
How long do TPMS sensors last? The internal battery generally lasts several years. When it dies the sensor is replaced rather than repaired.
Can I still drive with Service 4WD? Usually yes, in two-wheel drive. You may not be able to engage four-wheel drive until it is repaired.
Do these messages mean separate problems? Not necessarily. Multiple messages at once frequently share one root cause.
Bring it to Team One Chevrolet of Gadsden and we will find the actual cause.
